Charles Emmett Freeman

Gallery Artist

Charles Freeman is a self-taught musician/composer and multimedia artist. Part of the early Baltimore punk scene, he played bass and keyboards in the cabaret band B.B. Steele Review with John Waters stars Susan Lowe, Edith Massey and Cookie Mueller; Scratch ’n Sniff with drummer Gina Shock, and in Da Moronics with poet Tom Diventi before co-founding experimental new wave band nuvoblind with George Kondylas and co-founding neo-cabaret group Boister with Anne Watts. Charles is currently collaborating with artist Deborah Patterson to produce video and sound performance projects. Their collaboration, Depths of Being, premiered at JELMA Art Museum at Morgan State University in October 2023 and is currently on view at Manor Mill in Monkton. Both Charles and Deborah received Maryland State Arts Council Creativity Grants to produce this work.
